Memorial Day Weekend Roundup: Recent DUI Arrests And DUI Deaths

| No TrackBacks

Memorial Day weekend traditionally brings out a lot of drunk drivers on the roads in Los Angeles and across the entire country. Here is a roundup of recent DUI arrests and DUI deaths: According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, 287 people were arrested in Los Angeles County for driving under the influence on Memorial Day Weekend 2009 and two people died in drunk driving crashes during that same time period.

This year's trends are slightly different, as the California Highway Patrol reports that there were more drunk driving deaths and less DUI arrests during this year's holiday weekend. Ten people in Los Angeles County died on the roadways and only 220 arrests were made.

Statewide trends reflect the trends of Los Angeles as well. In California, CHP reported that there were 31 deaths and 1,296 people arrested for DUI this year. Memorial Day Weekend 2009 had only 12 roadway deaths in California, but 1,406 DUI arrests. All of these numbers cover the period from 6:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 a.m. on Monday. The total number of reported drunk driving arrests takes into account only CHP cases and does not include additional DUI arrests that could have been made by local police agencies.

Perhaps there weren't as many DUI arrests this year as there were last year, but many people may now still feel the need to contact a Los Angeles DUI defense lawyer. After a DUI arrest, a Los Angeles DUI attorney can usually evaluate all the evidence involved in a case, including DUI checkpoint procedures, field sobriety tests and chemical tests, to ensure that a suspect's legal rights are protected.
