If you're out drinking this weekend in L.A, make sure that you drive carefully and designate a sober driver because there will be DUI checkpoints in the area. The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed through press releases that there will be at least two checkpoints this weekend, one checkpoint will be in Southern Los Angeles in the Harbor Area and the other will be in the 77th Street Area. LAPD has announced that the checkpoints will be in the following locations.

  • Friday June 11: West Slauson Avenue between Buckler Avenue and Edgemar Avenue, between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.
  • Saturday June 12: Pacific Coast Highway between Vermont Avenue and Dodge Avenue, between 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.

Those areas of Los Angeles in particular have had a high number of drunk driving crashes that have either resulted in injuries, death, or property damage. In the year 2010, there have so far been 52 driving under the influence-related and 441 hit and run traffic collisions in the 77th Street Area alone.

The state of California actually has strict criteria for DUI checkpoints to be considered lawful. To learn more about the constraints that the LAPD officers have, please see our earlier blog post titled "Los Angeles DUI Attorneys Analyze Sobriety Checkpoints." If you feel that law enforcement officers didn't go through the right procedures to conduct a checkpoint, or if you've been wrongfully arrested for a DUI, don't hesitate to contact a DUI attorney in Los Angeles.
