Controversies Develop Over New Vodka Pill

If you don't like the taste of alcohol, but love the feeling of getting a buzz, there's a new product that might catch your interest.

Russian professor Evgeny Moskalev of Saint Petersburg Technological University has developed a technique that takes alcohol and transforms it into a powder, which can then be packed into pill form. Moskalev successfully developed "dry vodka," but he says the technique can solidify any kind of alcohol, including whisky, cognac, wine and beer.

Alcohol lovers might be excited about this new development, but law enforcers may have something to worry about if this product hits the market in the United States. Alcohol in a pill can lead to increased intoxication on the roads of Los Angeles, where there may be an increase in DUI arrests and fatalities. A DUI lawyer in Los Angeles would have to alter defense strategies and do substantial research on how such a pill can effect the body.

Driving under the influence is already a serious problem in California, where there were over 200,000 California DUI arrests in 2007, the last year DMV released drunk driving statistics to the public. Do we really need a substance that makes it easier for people to get intoxicated?

The FDA has not approved this product yet, so it could be some substantial amount of time before alcohol in a pill is available in stores. The FDA recently expressed disapproval of alcoholic energy drinks, so it will be interesting to see how they react to alcoholic pills.
